I met Elaine for a quick bite and we went to a Korean Mc Donalds. I was very interested in tasting their bulgogi burger. It was quite tasty and had a teriyaki secret sauce on it. The cost of the burger, fries and drink was 4300 won ( $3.79 US). The style was pretty much the same but the unruly kids climbing on top of the tables were a bit much.

Korean Porridge!!
My friend Elaine grabbed me from the coffee shop and took me to lunch on her break. I had no idea that Koreans made the most delicious porridge. We went inside this narrow restaurant and they gave us menus with every kind of porridge flavor.
I opted for the crabmeat porridge and Elaine chose the corn porridge in a bread bowl.
My Korean friend from the coffee shop said it's called "juk".
When the server brought it out, my porridge came with many sides. Koreans love their sides!! There was a side of kimchee, radishes, and some sort of pickled paste, and meat. Yummy.
Elaine's corn porridge was quite tasty! It reminded of a thick, cream of corn type of sweet soup.
I couldn't resist taking a picture of this cute little boy who wore a face mask in the form of a kitty cat's mouth and whiskers. At least if the kids must wear those preventative masks from germs, they can at least do so as their favorite pet.
The total price for our generous sized soups was $14,500 won ( $12.87 US ).

My favorite little coffee shop in Pyeongtaek!!
My friend Elaine teaches all day so as I wait for her, I frequent this adorable and cozy coffee shop each day that is owned by a young local man named Ken.
They have free wi-fi, clean facilities and they make the best coffee. My personal favorite is their mocha frappe and their vanilla latte. I often come here to write in my blog and do research for my next country. His mother is so precious and they are friendly and kind. It also helps that he speaks English very well because he lived in Australia for a bit if you need to ask for local directions or just chat.
I always love to support the local businesses versus the big franchises. If you are ever in Pyeongtaek, come and check out Gabae Maru Coffee House. It's located at Bi-Joen 2 Dong 838-5, Pyung-Taek Si, Kyung-Ki-Do, South Korea tel. 031-655-6414.

Songtan, Korea near US Osan AB
The town was quiet last night. There were few US military wandering the streets but it might be because it was a weekday.
My friend, Elaine showed me this area. It's filled with rock-n-roll bars and tons of seedy little hotels for the US military to hang out and unwind. There are also a lot of retail shops for Americans to buy imported American clothes and grocery stores to buy expensive imported American goods. The area is steps away from the US base. We walked in to a couple of my friend's bars where they were filled with "juicy" girls. This is a term used here in Korea for predominantly filipino girls who sit with you at the bar and you buy them a "juice." You can walk into any of these bars and these girls are on the male GI's and tourists like white on rice. They are not supposed to be strippers or prostitutes but they will dance for you and spend time with you while you buy them a drink. Some will perform some sexual favors for the cost of the more expensive juice! These girls are contracted by the bars to where super skimpy outfits and get men to buy them a drink. These "juicy girls" are giving my people a bad rap."
The highlight of our evening was eating the best korean cheeseburger in town at Miss Jin's Hamburger joint. She put all of her kids through college in the states by making the best hamburger in town. She makes more money here than the Mc Donald's down the street. They have the traditional korean cheeseburger with a fried egg on top of it, cabbage and her secret sauce. I had to have two!! It was delicious!! I had a cheeseburger and a Dr. Pepper for $4000 won ($3.55 US). This place definitely gets my vote!!

North Korea bombs Yeonpyeong Island: It's only 80 km(50 miles) from Incheon Airport.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11825445
Leave it to me to have interesting timing when visiting Korea! North Korea fired at this South Korea Yoenpyeong Island and Koreans are nervous and frightened to see what happens next.
My friend Elaine who teaches here is Korea said her students are constantly talking about the north bombing the south everyday. There is a constant threat everyday of this actually happening and now it finally did.
I have never been so close to any type of war or bombing. This island is only 80 km (50 miles) west of Incheon. I landed at the Incheon Airport only days before this incident had happened. There are talks of the Incheon Airport closing temporarily for security reasons. I have to leave out of that same airport on Monday afternoon for Mumbai, India. I plan on going back to Seoul over the weekend which is only about two hours away from this bombing.
I'll keep you posted to see what happens.
I am currently staying with my friend in Pyeongtaek which is an hour away from Seoul. My friend took me to Songtan. This is an area where the US Osan AB is located. We didn't find out about the bombing until we got home that night but the area was quiet. There were some military walking around and you would not know that there was a bombing only a couple hours away.

I arrived in Pyeongtaek, Korea today!
I will be here for the duration of the week while my friend Elaine goes back to work teaching. She has long hours in this little town. We left Seoul in the morning for Pyeongtaek. It is about an hour away. We had some fish soup and tempura at the local Lotte Mart. It reminded me of a Walmart. Everything from clothes to a supermarket were in this little one stop shop. She gave me a short tour around town before going to work She took me to her hair salon so I could get a new haircut. There was a communication barrier since I could not speak Korean but I am really good at pointing at pictures! This stylist named Chung was simply amazing.
Sexxxy Hotel in Itaewon!! Last day before heading to Pyeongtaek.
I absolutely this hotel that we stayed at. It's the IP Boutique Hotel. The rooms reminded of Miami. The rooms were pristine white with 2 sided all glass walls that encased the bathrooms. Very sexxxy and clean. The lobby was modern and this hotel is centrally located in Itaewon and surrounded by clubs, shops, international restaurants and quite a diverse area.

As Elaine and I walked around, we stumbled into a shop called, Ferrara Korea that sold high end, custom leather jackets that were made with italian leather. I had to hold back because I know I will be able to get some amazing pieces when I go to Argentina. This store was top notch as quality of leather and detail. They also specialized in beautiful fur pieces. I had my eye on a black fox hat with a matching cape that had chinchilla fur!! Whoa!! It was hot and the prices were reasonable but where I am I going to pack it?? I had to just walk away! :(
As the afternoon escaped us, Elaine and I decided to walk into this spa on the third floor of the Coffee Bean. It is called, The Green Turtle. All I have to say is keep going and do not pass go! My friend Elaine said she gives it a two thumbs down and if she had two more hands, she would give it a four thumbs down!! First off, the massage was overpriced for an hour. It was about $70,000 won ($61 dollars). This is high for an asian massage. We both thought it MUST be good!
Instead of giving us bathrobes, they gave us grey t-shirts and cotton shorts. We both looked like gym rejects. We continued in the room and it was a community massage where there were 6 tables for all women rather than private rooms. Elaine had a woman that was sniffling and sneezing and using her hand to wipe her nose!! OH NO!!!
"Bird Flu" flashed across my mind. She said, no it's just allergies!
My girl, rubbed me down like she was tenderizing a pork chop!! She flipped me over like she was marinating a piece of meat. Wow! Elaine's lady left the room in the middle of the massage about 12 times. Maybe she went to blow her nose! Elaine and I left that place and felt like we had to take a shower and wash our hands. Trust me, I have had many a massage in third world countries but it just wasn't good or hygienic.
For dinner, we went to this trendy tapas restaurant called, "Between". Directions: From the Itaewon subway exit 2, walk straight about three minutes. It’s on your right, across from the gas station. It’s big, so you can’t miss it.
Phone number: (02)795-6164 They served tapas and italian. I know what you are thinking. Why in the world would you go to Korea to eat tapas and italian. My poor friend, Elaine was desperate for non-Korean food since she lives in a village that ONLY has Korean, Japanese and a limited selection of anything else.
Now this place was DE-liciousssss! Yummy!
I had the gnocchi carbonara and Elaine had a crepe filled with spinach and ricotta!
